You already know that dehumidifiers are a great way to get rid of musty odors and that stuffy feeling in your home in summer. But how do you REALLY know if your home needs a dehumidifier?
It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity that gets you.
We can almost guarantee that you’ve heard someone in Raleigh use this expression! But why exactly is it that humid air is more difficult to breathe, and it feels hotter and WORSE than dry air?
For one thing, because the moisture in humid air makes it more difficult for you to properly sweat.
Why? Because as you probably know, the reason you sweat is … as moisture evaporates off your body, it cools your body down. So, when the air has too much moisture, your sweat is NOT going to be able to evaporate because of that saturated air. That means the sticky sweat stays on you! Along the same lines, humid air is harder to breathe, especially for people with asthma, because there is actually less oxygen in humid air! With the increased moisture in the air, more oxygen molecules are bonded to H2O, rather than being free molecules for you to breathe.
Now that the science lesson is over, and you understand how and why humid air can negatively impact you and your home …
How do you know if you need a dehumidifier?
There are obvious signs that your home is too humid, like fog/condensation on your walls and windows. But you should also keep an eye out for dampness or mold/mildew growth, especially in areas more prone to it like your basement. This is because, especially if your basement doesn’t have its own return vent, your A/C might not be able to get sufficiently conditioned air to the basement.
What if your home doesn’t have the tell-tale condensation, bad ventilation, odors, or mildew that are signs of a humid home?
You may still be in the early stages of a high humidity problem. With either a smart thermostat or a humidity meter, you can make sure that your indoor humidity is within the recommended range. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends that indoor humidity stay between 35%- 50%.
