Can you believe the holidays are already here? With all the hustle and bustle, it’s easy to forget about the not-so-glamorous potential issues of the season – like clogged drains!
As you prepare feasts for family and friends this holiday season, it’s important to be mindful of what goes down those kitchen and bathroom drains.
The obvious
Avoid pouring fats, oils, and grease down the drain. The task of cleaning up roasting pans covered in turkey drippings is a pain, but let them solidify and throw it away. Trust us, you’ll regret it later if you don’t!
Other holiday foods that are surprisingly a problem
Leftover food scraps like potato peels, corn cobs, and celery sticks can also wreak havoc on pipes. Make sure to catch those in the trash or instead. Don’t assume everything can be ground up in your garbage disposal. Stick to soft foods like cooked veggies – never put bones, egg shells, or fibrous material like corn husks in there as you are inviting an unwanted jam.
Less likely – but don’t let decor around your drains
Oh, and don’t get started on holiday decor! As gorgeous as fresh pine garland, wreaths, and Christmas trees smell, keep them far away from sinks and toilets. Loose needles and leaves can clump together, and clog drains fast. Be sure to cut flowers and trim stems very short before arranging bouquets near water sources too.
A small price to pay
And sure, none of this sounds very fun or festive. But trust us, a backed-up drain is way worse, and not how anyone wants to spend the most wonderful time of the year! So do your pipes (and our plumbers) a favor and be selective about what goes down those drains over the holidays.
