It’s that time of year again! Storm season is here, and Weather Master wants your family to be safe when a tropical storm or hurricane hits. Here’s what you need to do to be prepared.
Before a storm:
Create an emergency kit
Fill a bag with survival essentials including water, non-perishable food and a first aid kit.
Memorize local routes and emergency shelters
This will help when roads and bridges are closed, and you will have to get around during severe weather.
Withdraw cash from an ATM
Some stores and businesses may not have power and will only be able to accept cash. Be prepared by taking money out of an ATM ahead of time.
Put gas in your car
It’s better to be safe than sorry. Make sure you have a full tank so you can get anywhere, anytime during an emergency.
Stay updated on conditions from your local news or police
You should know what severe weather is coming next so you can figure out what to do and how to stay safe.
During a storm:
Go to the safest room in your house
Stay away from windows and glass doors. Secure all doors and lie on the floor while covering your head.
Wait until the storm is completely over
If the storm starts to quiet down, don’t leave the room. Wait at least 20 minutes until you’re sure the storm is over.
After a storm:
Listen to local news
Stay updated on the latest storm information and road conditions.
Don’t drive – unless you must
Know your local road conditions. Be cautious of flooded roads, and don’t drive if another storm is coming.
Stay away from powerlines
Report fallen or damaged powerlines quickly to your local power company.
Check your home for damage
Look for loose powerlines, structural damage and gas leaks. If you smell gas, do not walk into your home. Take pictures of all damage and have your home checked by a building inspector.
Storm season ends in November. If you have any damage to your HVAC system, plumbing or electrical outlets, schedule an appointment with Weather Master. We’ll fix it for you and help get your home back in tip-top shape.
