Nothing ruins a painstakingly landscaped Carolina lawn faster than a big, ugly air conditioner. We know, we know- we’re in the business of air conditioners here at Weather Master Heating & Air Conditioning, but we are with you on this one.
Air conditioners aren’t pretty.
There are several ways you can hide, mask or camouflage your air conditioner without compromising on the performance of your system. None of which involve hoisting your cooling system up on your roof.
When hiding your air conditioner, you will want to keep in mind that your A/C needs room for air to circulate. The harder your air conditioner has to work to cool your home or circulate the air- the less efficient it will be. However, if you hide your AC system behind a wall or greenery that provides your unit with shade, you will be doing yourself a favor and will likely see lower utility bills, as a result.
Given the fact that our expertise is in HVAC, plumbing and air quality, we have scoured the internet to bring you these clever and inexpensive solutions for hiding your outdoor air conditioning unit.

1. Hide your air conditioner (and keep it in your yard) with a trellis fence. Take a cue from what you already have in your garden or see around your neighborhood when deciding on a style. One of the benefits of using a trellis design is that it provides your air conditioner plenty of room to breathe.
2. Build a permanent home for your air conditioner. As long as you make sure that it is well ventilated, you can build a permanent structure right around your air conditioner. You can be creative as you want and blend your storage into your environment by using materials similar to your home. Take a cue from these genius backyard shed ideas.
3. Plant shrubs or other greenery to mask an ugly A/C and help the environment at the same time. Keep any plants at least two feet away from your air conditioner, and they will serve as your most ‘green’ option for hiding your equipment from sight. Bonus: the plants act as natural shade to keep your unit cool in the hot sun. You may also consider using potted plants or vines as well.
