Indoor air quality is becoming one of the most important things that people are starting to pay more attention to. The air we breathe in our homes is very important, especially for those with allergies or asthma. While there are a number of ways to improve the indoor air quality in your home (like using air filters, for example), many homeowners find that there are other remedies and easy tips.
1. Dust, dust, dust
Dust is a buildup of organic materials from many sources including human skin, hair and clothing … That sounds a little gross, huh? The best way to reduce your homemade dust particle count around the house is to vacuum often with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter. Just like your heating and cooling system’s air filter might be a HEPA filter, a HEPA filter in a vacuum is more effective because they are actually made of microscopic glass fibers that trap dust. Other vacuum cleaners are more likely to just push dust around your home.
2. Open windows
Open a window and let the breeze in. This is not only a great way to refresh your home, it’s also one of the easiest ways to reduce dust particles inside your home. If you’re unable to open the windows for some reason, then an air purifier is a far better solution. Open windows may also not be an option during the winter months, making other indoor air quality solutions more viable.
3. Clean your mattress
The buildup of dust and other particles in your mattress over time can absolutely contribute to allergies and even illness. Mattresses collect dust mites, mold spores and bacteria in addition to dust. Don’t neglect your bed! Vacuum it regularly as well as spot clean with a damp cloth or vacuum hose attachment.
4. Clean your heating and cooling system’s air filter (and change it often)
Your heating and cooling system needs an air filter replacement at least every 3 months – make that every month, if you’re a pet owner. If you don’t change your filter often enough, you won’t be able to breathe as well due to particles and pollutants no longer getting picked up. Also, this will cause your system to work harder than it needs to (and cost you more money)!
5. Keep pets off the bed and couch
Speaking of special rules for pet owners … We know this one sounds a little mean, and some pet owners won’t be able to bear it. We understand! But the simple fact is that the dander and hair from pets can absolutely wreak havoc on people with allergies. As you can imagine, any dander on a mattress, couch, or other furniture just gets sucked right up like a sponge. And then this dander can’t get picked up by an air filter or air purifier!
